The research community of TUCS integrates the following disciplines formed on the basis of academic excellence in computer science and engineering.
Computational Biology and Bioinformatics
The research is carried out by several research groups at the Department of Information Technology and at the Department of Mathematics at UTU, and at the Department of Information Technologies at ÅAU. Senior researchers at all three departments serve in the editorial boards of international journals and in the program committees of high-level international conferences.
Embedded Systems
The research is carried out at ÅAU Embedded Systems Laboratory, Distributed Systems laboratory, and at UTU Computer Systems Laboratory and Telecommunication Systems Laboratory. The Embedded Systems laboratory and the Distributed Systems laboratory were part of the CREST Centre of Excellence in Research in 2002-2007.
Formal Methods
The research is carried out in the Laboratories of Software Construction, Distributed Systems, Learning and Reasoning, and Computational Systems Biology. The three first mentioned laboratories were part of the CREST Centre of Excellence in Research in 2002-2007.
Fundamentals of Computing and Discrete Mathematics
The research is carried out at FUNDIM Centre (Fundamentals of Computing and Discrete Mathematics). Members of FUNDIM are frequent participants in program and steering committees of the most important conferences of the field and serve in about 15 editorial boards of top level international journals in theoretical computer science and discrete mathematics. In the recent evaluation of the Academy ("The state and quality of scientific research in Finland") mathematics was mentioned as one of internationally top areas, and inside mathematics, analysis and discrete mathematics with applications were seen as major directions. FUNDIM is an important part of the strength in discrete mathematics indicating a national responsibility of doctoral education of the field to FUNDIM.
Information Systems
The research is carried out at ÅAU Institute for Advanced Management System Research (IAMSR), at the Laboratory of Data Mining and Knowledge Management, and at UTU Turku School of Economics, Institute of Information Systems Sciences.
Software Engineering
The research is carried out at ÅAU Software Construction and Engineering, Distributed Systems Laboratories and at UTU in Centre for Software Business and Engineering. The laboratories of Software Construction and Distributed Systems were part of the CREST Centre of Excellence in 2002-2007.
