Travelling Instructions
These new instructions regarding TUCS GS travel grants apply from February 1st, 2010 onwards.
TUCS Graduate School provides financial support for mobility for all students with TUCS GS status. In addition to conference trips, it is also possible to receive funding for attending doctoral courses and summer schools, as well as for international research collaboration. A supporting statement by the student's supervisor is a prerequisite for all TUCS travel support.
When applying for a travel grant, the application form (http://tucs.fi/downloads/forms/TUCSTravelGrantApplication.2010.pdf) is to be filled out, including a supervisor's statement and an estimate of the travel costs, and delivered to TUCS office by email (Irmeli Laine) or as paper copy. In case of a conference trip, the first page of the paper showing TUCS affiliation should also be attached.
A grant can be applied for either before or after the trip. TUCS directors make a decision of the grant and the amount granted. The grant will be set on a fixed sum covering all or part of the travel costs.
The student's home department is responsible for the practical arrangements, including travel plans and invoices, as well as all the travel costs. If the application is approved, the real costs or the granted amount, depending on which is less, will be invoiced from TUCS by the department.
TUCS Affiliation
As TUCS is an independent institution and a research centre, it is extremely important that it will become internationally well known. Therefore, all publications that will be published under TUCS should mention TUCS by name. The importance of this matter will be even more emphasized in the future when the financing of TUCS will be more and more dependent on the results it makes. Thus, those whose salary is supported by TUCS, should type "Turku Centre for Computer Science TUCS" as the first institutional affiliation under the author's name in all publications (articles, papers, proceedings, abstracts, etc.). After TUCS you may mention the names of other universities/organizations you are affiliated with. Those whose salary is not supported by TUCS can mention TUCS as the second affiliation. This principle applies especially to all TUCS Ph.D. students, and it is recommended for all researchers associated with TUCS (i.e. researchers in TUCS Research Centres and Groups). In cases with more than two affiliation, this principle is to be appreciated as applicable.
In order to get financial support for conferences, congresses or meetings, TUCS has to be mentioned as an affiliation. If you are on leave from some other institute and only visiting TUCS, you should follow the principles above, but additionally you can mention the name of your home institute as a footnote in the publication ("visiting researcher from N University, Town, Country" or "on leave of absence from N University, Town, Country").
The supervisors of the research groups are responsible for making sure that TUCS is mentioned as an affiliation in the publications. Please also note that when you hand in your application you should also include a copy of your paper or abstract which shows your institutional affiliation.
