Workshop

Pattern Mastery through Pattern Writing

By

James O. Coplien, Bell Laboratories

Honna Segel, Nortel Networks

Turku, Finland, August 20 - 21, 2001

DEADLINE FOR THE REGISTRATION IS JUNE 15th!!

The workshop is held just after the
Summer School on Software Architecture
We encourage you to participate in both events.

Course duration: 2 days, Introductory Level

Software patterns are a literary form, designed to communicate expert knowledge about system construction.  The most useful patterns are the ones that address structural problems, and which are carefully written to be readable.

This course teaches pattern-writing skills in the context of the broader goals and values of the pattern community.  The course mixes a small amount of lecture with exercises and small workshops. Attendees do a comparative analysis of published patterns.  On the second day, participants work in small teams to write patterns, and participate as an author in a writer's workshop.

Things you will get from this workshop include:

  • how to write patterns for ease of reading and application
  • the principles of writing patterns so they combine in a pattern language
  • the Writers' Workshop review format used by the pattern community
  • foundations of patterns that separate them from rules of thumb and other knowledge management techniques
  • insights into the software pattern community and culture
  • The instructors are open to tune the course to emphasize what the students want to get out of it.  If you have questions about details of the event, please write to Jim Coplien, JOCoplien@cs.com.
